Postgraduate Center for Mental Health has trained psychotherapists for a professional life of clinical practice, scholarship, and teaching since 1948; and continues its commitment to develop mental health professionals with superior skill to provide quality mental health care in agency-based and independent practice settings. Many graduates have attained international status for their contributions to the field and serve as faculty, supervisors, and training analysts. Our affiliations with The Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society, the Newman Library of Baruch College which houses our extensive psychoanalytic library, and the on-line journal Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy provide candidates with a strong network for learning and continuing professional development.

PCMH recognizes that today's professional must acquire a broad range of skills and master a knowledge base of great complexity. Our training programs are designed to help Candidates meet these challenges through theory immersion courses, summer intensive coursework, clinical supervision, and personal analysis. PCMH is a leader in the integration of neuroscience and knowledge of the brain with time-tested theories of the mind and interpersonal relations. Candidates at PCMH find an atmosphere of intellectual freedom and personal depth that encourages the pursuit of knowledge and growth.

Specialty Training Program in Analytic Group Therapy

The Specialty Training Program in Analytic Group Therapy is a two-year, one-half-day-a week program, which has been offered continuously since 1957 on Thursday mornings. This program trains candidates to do analytically oriented group therapy, as well as combined therapy, with a high degree of competence. It also helps candidates develop skills in the teaching and supervision of group therapy in a wide variety of clinical settings. Every effort is made to maintain friendly, collegial working relationships between candidates and faculty.

The Pastoral Counseling Training Program

The Pastoral Counseling Training Program was established in 1964 in response to a recognized need by clergy of every denomination for increased counseling skills. About 40% of troubled persons first consult the clergy for help. This Certification Program has been designed to provide working clinical tools essential for effective ministry. Training provides a sound basis for recognizing underlying client psychodynamics, assessing the type and degree of disturbance, focusing counseling goals, formulating interventions, developing effective referral strategies and deepening spiritual roots.

Gutheil Library Collection:
The William & Anita Newman Library at Baruch College

In October 2000, the 11,000 volume Gutheil Library collection of the Postgraduate Center for Mental Health was transferred to the William & Anita Newman Library at Baruch College. Faculty, staff, students and affiliates of the PCMH continue to receive library services. NEWMAN LIBRARY SERVICES for the FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY POSTGRADUATE CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH. The William and Anita Newman Library of Baruch College was opened in 1994 and is part of the 330,000 square foot Library and Technology Center at 151 E. 25th St., between Lexington and 3rd Avenue.
